While Ashland may be the focus of your trip, and you will certainly find many things of interest here, consider adding additional days. Crater Lake National Park: Crater Lake has inspired people for hundreds of years. No place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in color; sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet high; two picturesque islands; and a violent volcanic past. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom. World famous for its fishing and white-water rafting, it is one of the original eight rivers included in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, which included 84 miles of the Rogue, from 7 miles west of Grants Pass to 11 miles east of Gold Beach. Having preserved its gold rush roots from the 1800's, it is one of few towns able to boast its designation as a National Historic Landmark. Take in a little of its history by strolling the old cemetery, visiting the museums, or riding the trolley to view the many historic homes and landmarks.
